Which technique should I use to dye my skirt fabric?

I decided to make my own dyed fabric to print my design on for my onion inspired skirt on. My goal for this fabric is to make it look like Onion skin.

Firstly, I could use watercolour to tint the fabric in vertical lines going down the straight grain. For each line I would have a gradient where it gets darker towards the centre off the paint.

Next, I could quilt the fabric. As I am going to add wadding, or stuffing into the panel to make it look three dimensional like a onion I could stitch over the of the plain fabric, my design. This would create a textured finish. As you can see in this picture above of my quilted sample. I have stitched white thread onto white fabric. I like the subtle effect it creates however next time I would use a slightly coloured thread to make the design more eye catching.

My final idea and the idea i like the most is to tye die the fabric. I would cut the fabric into 2 different parts depending on the size which is needed for the amount of the panels. I would tie the 2 sections differently, one in a long tube with perpendicular tires and another one where the bands are tied arond a venter point. The straght lines piece is for the top layer and the round lines would be for the inner layers, this represents what the onion looks like. I would then make dye out of orange onions and red onions and put the tied fabric in the correct dye.

In my patterncutting book I have this page layed out with samples of each technique.
