Pictograms of natural forms.

In photography we collected natural forms from outside, then went into the darkroom and laid out the objects onto light sensitive paper. Once happy with my placement of the injury’s I exposed the paper to light for 12 seconds creating my first pictograms. I took the objects off the paper and put it in the machine which develops the image.

After the image came out of the machine I photocopied it onto cartridge paper ( this is because cartrige paper is thinner than light sensitive paper, meaning the following pictograms will be bolder.) Using hand embroidery I stitched onto this pictograms in the style of the artist I was looking at.

Once this was done I went back into the dark room and placed a piece of light sensitive paper down (shiny side up) , this piece of embroidered paper was then placed face down onto the paper. A thin sheet of glass is then placed ontop to flatten the paper together.

I then made a test strip to decide what I should set the time exposure to For the full piece.

The different sections show how long each part is exposed for. Each section is exposed to light for 3 seconds dofferent to one another. The right is 3 seconds and the left is 15 seconds.

I decided to expose it to light for 12 seconds however next time I would like more contrast. To do this I would expose the paper to light for 15 seconds

I am going to use this technique further in my work as I like the outcome which it creates . This could be done by inverting the colours of samples.
