Making my fabric for my onion inspired skirt.

I decided I would tie dye white cotton using 2 different types of onions; red onions and orange onions.

Firstly I brought 6 onions of both red onions and orange onion. I then peeled the outside pieces of each onion and put them in a pan of boiling water depending on whether they are red onion or orange. Making sure not to mix the different colours up. These 2 pans were then heated for 1 hour.

Whilst the onion skins were being heated I measured how much fabric I would need for each section ( I found this out using the costing cloth which I squared off using the app called CamScanner). I then soaked both pieces of cotton in cold water then let it dry slightly so that it is only damp.

I tightly rolled the larger piece of cotton perpendicular to the straight grain. Then I tied string around the rolled cotton as tightly as possible.

I repeated the same process however this time I tied the string around a centre point And put it in the other dye.

The pans were then put on the heat for another hour. The right dye is made using the red onions and the left pan contains the orange onion.

I then took the dyed fabric out of the pans and let them dry. After that I cut the string and unraveled the fabric.

I am really happy with how this design turned out as represents the details on a onion well, however next time I would leave the fabric in the dye longer and tie the string tighter as the pigment of the dye was not strong the centre of the fabric.
