consent 21 tote bag.

during stretch we were given the task of creating a piece of artwork for the consent shown exhibition.

I was in a group with Poppy Cannon and Doug Evens and as a group we decided out of all our ideas we came up with we shortlisted two: a tote bag which will spread awareness about consent, or have a empty bottle of alcohol and people write on pieces of paper their experiences to do with the theme of consent on.

We decided to go with the idea of the tote bag. as we thought it would be more challenging and interesting to make.

on the front we came up with the idea to put a hand which is shaking 'hands' with a foot as a sign of agreement, however something doesn't feel right. this links to the theme of consent as if something feels wrong = NO. We also decided to make the bad white so that it is genderless and red to show danger. on the back we put the definition of consent to remind passers by what it means.

The making process

firstly we cut 2 pieces of calico and fused interfacing to the back. Then once we did that, using a chalk pen drew the outline of the foot and hand.

Then using a large embroidery hoop u used a straight stitch and created the drawing making sure each line has 2 rows of stitching on it.

once that was done we cut red straps, added interfacing, folded them and stitched the width to be 3cm.

the seams were then overlocked and hemmed and the straps were attached.

Final outcome!

when taking photos for this bag we decided to put the bag on a mannequin that was stood in the middle of the crossroads to show how it is worn to spread awareness fort consent.

Our bag is now hung up in the consent show exhibition amongst some incredible work which is also spreading awareness for the importance if consent.

The exhibition is running from the 11th November to the 15th at the Lund gallery in the university college school.
